Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a surprise visit to a hospital in Northern Ireland on Wednesday to meet with DCI John Caldwell and his family.
Footage appearing on social media on Wednesday afternoon showed the PM exiting a hospital following the visit to the senior police officer and his family.
A spokesperson for 10 Downing Street confirmed Sunak’s visit to the hospital, following his meeting with visiting US President Joe Biden earlier on Wednesday.
A brief statement from the spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister met with DCI John Caldwell and his family this afternoon. We will not be providing further comment.”
DCI Caldwell was shot a number of times by masked gunmen as he loaded footballs into his car alongside his son at Omagh Youthsport on 22 February.
The PSNI say Caldwell remains in a ‘critical but stable condition’, which has remain unchanged since his condition was first reported by police following the shooting.
15 arrests have been made to date in connection with the attempted murder of DCI Caldwell, who had led high-profile investigations into murders and terrorism during his years with the PSNI .
Police believe the shooting was carried out by the New IRA.
Sunak had welcomed President Biden on his arrival to Northern Ireland on Tuesday, before a meeting with the US leader in the Grand Central Hotel in Belfast on Wednesday.
