PM not ruling out VAT cut on energy bills

Boris Johnson has said he would not “rule out” cutting VAT on energy bills. Asked why he had not done so yet, he told BBC Radio 4’s Today: “I don’t rule out that we will do it.”

He was non-committal when asked if he would cut fuel duty further. “We’ve already cut fuel duty by record amounts,” he said, but he acknowledged this would be “swallowed up” and added: “There may be more that we have to do.”

Pressed on whether the tax will be further slashed, he said: “We want to make sure that those cuts are properly passed on to the consumer.”

During the same interview, the PM would not give a figure by which Channel crossings need to come down before it is known the Rwanda migrant policy has worked.

He said: “I’m not going to give you a figure.” He said the “humane policy” is about “breaking the business model of those who criminally abuse and cheat people crossing the Channel in unseaworthy vessels”.
