PM Modi asks semiconductor CEOs to step up industry participation in next phase of India’s growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged global and Indian semiconductor companies to actively participate in the next phase of India’s semiconductor growth, calling for greater industry involvement in skilling, innovation and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

Modi chaired a roundtable with leading semiconductor industry CEOs at Seva Teerth, where he stressed closer collaboration between the government and the industry as India seeks to expand its capabilities across the semiconductor value chain.

He said India should aspire to be among the early leaders in emerging technologies.

He highlighted India’s talent pool, technology adoption and infrastructure as key strengths, and said these capabilities, combined with the experience of global industry leaders, could create significant opportunities for the country.

Referring to the government's target of training one crore people in AI, Modi called for greater industry participation in building skills and capabilities needed for emerging technologies.

Modi reiterated the government's commitment to maintaining a predictable and responsive policy environment for the semiconductor sector. At the same time, he said policies would need to evolve in line with technological advances and industry requirements.

He invited industry leaders to share suggestions on policy and administrative measures to strengthen the sector and said their inputs would be considered in further policymaking.

The prime minister also said the semiconductor ecosystem had moved from foundational efforts towards a phase of greater scale and opportunity.

The CEOs at the meeting highlighted progress in semiconductor manufacturing, design, infrastructure and talent development, according to the PIB statement.

They expressed confidence in the opportunities emerging under the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 (ISM 2.0) and in India’s ability to develop capabilities across the semiconductor value chain, including manufacturing, research and development, advanced technologies and supporting industries.

The industry representatives also expressed their commitment to contributing to India's emergence as a globally competitive semiconductor and technology hub.

The meeting was attended by senior representatives from global semiconductor and technology companies and organisations, including SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron, Fujifilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semiconductor Devices, Advantest, Celesta Capital, CG Power and IBM Research.
