Plush Scots hotel evacuated after smoke pours out from basement as fire crews race to scene

A plush Scots hotel had to be evacuated after smoke was seen "pouring out" from the basement.

Emergency services raced to Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel in Edinburgh city centre after the alarm was raised at around 9.20pm on Friday July 29. Fire crews used a thermal imaging camera to identify the cause of the fire, which was coming from beneath ground level.

Locals and guests watched on as firefighters broke through a basement window from the pavement, with two fire engines deployed to the square. Crews remained at the scene for some time, with the cause of the blaze later being identified as a "small quantity of rubbish on top of a footlight and floorboards."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service told Edinburgh Live : "Crews were called out to reports of a building fire at around 9.21pm on Friday, July 29.

"Light smoke was seen from the basement area on arrival, crews then worked to ascertain where the smoke was coming from, and used a thermal image camera and small tools.

"The fire identified as a small quantity of rubbish on top of a footlight and floorboards, the fire has now been extinguished."
