The FAI appeared on Tuesday night to pull the plug on an Aviva Stadium friendly next month between a League of Ireland representative side and a team from the Premier League.
An Abbotstown spokesperson said the Association had no plans for a game involving a League of Ireland XI.
The possibility of a glamour match emerged last month when initial talks took place regarding a visit to Dublin of an unnamed Premier League side.
Any fixture would have coincided with the end of the Irish season and English football's World Cup break.
Mirror Sport learned early on Tuesday that discussions took place at FAI level.
A number of senior League of Ireland players were approached over a month ago to gauge their interest in taking part in an end-of-campaign game against English opposition.
Yesterday’s news of a proposed Aviva Stadium match came hot on the heels of a report in Australia of plans for a League of Ireland XI to visit Perth for a three-game series.
However, an FAI spokesperson last night said: “The FAI has no plans to play a League of Ireland representative team next month.”
The news will be welcomed by the majority of League of Ireland fans - and many officials too.
There was a frosty reception on Tuesday to the Mirror online's revelation that discussions had taken place.
One social media said
Shamrock Rovers board member Mark Lynch recalled how the Hoops' performance away to Juventus, when an Alessandro Del Piero wonder-goal was all that separated the two sides, was overshadowed by a heavy LOI XI defeat to Manchester United.
One user said: "What is this to achieve."
And there were plenty more negative reactions to the development.
With another user saying: "No thank you"
And another added: "Does nothing to develop the League of Ireland or grassroots Irish football, rather the opposite"
