Plea seeks ban on speakers for azaan at Mathura mosque

AGRA: A fresh application was filed in a Mathura court on Thursday, seeking a ban on azaan using loudspeakers at Shahi Idgah, the mosque that is adjacent to the Krishna Janambhoomi temple and caught up in a bitter dispute that has reared its head again in recent weeks.

In his application, the treasurer of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, Dinesh Sharma, claimed that since the idgah was the "sanctum sanctorum of lord Krishna, azaan should not be held in the mosque". "This is a violation of the fundamental rights of those who are living around the idgah," he said in his plea. He added, “Since there is a high court order banning the use of loudspeakers at religious places, this practice (at the Mathura mosque) must also be banned.”
