PlayStation State of Play September 2022: five biggest announcements

Well, that’s another Playstation State of Play in the bag. It wasn’t a must-watch broadcast, but Sony did show off plenty of slick-looking PS4 and PS5 games — many of which are coming out soon too.

If you missed the show, don’t fret! We’re here to break down the biggest announcements from PlayStation’s State of Play September 2022 showcase. There were some curious reveals, an interesting rebranding, and several exciting trailers. Let’s go through all of the sizzle reel action below.

Tekken 8's first-ever gameplay footage is thrilling

Yup, Tekken 8 is real. Bandai Namco graced us with in-game footage, and it looks utterly jaw-dropping. None of it was pre-rendered like previous entries in the series, either.

“This trailer was actually taken directly from a certain part in the current work-in-progress Tekken 8’s story mode, played on [PS5],” Katsuhiro Harada, Chief Producer of Tekken Project, said via the PlayStation Blog. “In other words, all the character models, backgrounds, and effects are the same ones that are used in-game.”

No release date for Tekken 8, but it’ll launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Yakuza Ishin gets the Like a Dragon-like remake

This one was totally out of left-field. Like a Dragon: Ishin, a top-to-bottom remake of the Yakuza spinoff Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin, is coming.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is a ‘what if’ story of sorts. Many iconic characters from the Yakuza series, including protagonist Kazuma Kiryu (known as Sakamoto Ryoma), are thrust into 1860s Kyoto when samurai still roamed Japan.

Best of all, Like a Dragon: Ishin is coming out in Feb. 2023 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Rise of the Ronin gets a reveal

Team Ninja is back and bringing us another top-shelf action RPG with Rise of the Ronin. It’s the same studio that brought us Nioh and Nioh 2 – that’s enough reason for most to be excited. Fumihiko Yasuda, president of Team Ninja, gave some story insight on the PlayStation Blog.

“It is the very end of a 300-year long Edo Period, commonly known as ‘Bakumatsu.’ Set in the late 19th century, Japan is facing the darkest of times as it struggles with its oppressive rulers and deadly diseases while western influence permeates as civil war continues to rage between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Anti-Shogunate factions,” Yasuda explains. “Here in this time of mayhem, you embody a Ronin character, a warrior bound to no master and free to make choices of its own.”

Hogwarts Legacy's PlayStation-exclusive content gets a teaser

There have been a few teases for the PlayStation-exclusive content in Hogwarts Legacy, and it’s taking shape as a questline called The Haunted Hogsmeade Shop.

“Cassandra Mason has a shop to sell you in Hogsmeade, but all is not as it seems in this run-down establishment,” Chandler Wood, community manager at WB Games Avalanche, said via the PlayStation Blog. “What sinister secrets lie beneath Madam Mason’s shop and why was she so keen to sell it? That’s a mystery Hogwarts Legacy players will discover in the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest exclusively available on PlayStation platforms.”

It sounds in line with other whimsical Harry Potter fluff, alright.

God of War Ragnarok's new story trailer is dark, moody

Much to the surprise of everyone, God of War Ragnarok got a new trailer. This one focuses on narrative bits, particularly the joint burden Kratos and Atreus are undertaking.

There’s also (unsurprisingly) lots of white-knuckle action. Kratos is locking horns with giant spectral jellyfish and making friends with giant wolves in this one.

God of War Ragnarok launches for PS4 and PS5 on Nov. 9, 2022.
