Sony is holding its first PlayStation Showcase of the year today, and it's set to be packed with news on what's in store for the PS5 and PSVR 2.
We've had a couple of PlayStation State of Play events already this year, with the last one in April giving us a more in-depth look at the upcoming Final Fantasy 16. The May 2023 PlayStation Showcase is a much bigger affair by comparison, with the events setting the stage for major announcements and exciting reveals,
Sony has confirmed that we're looking at a runtime of an hour for the PlayStation Showcase May 2023, with the focus being PS5 and PSVR 2 games currently in development at its stable of studios worldwide. We'll also be getting some premieres from the sounds of it, with Sony teasing "a glimpse at several new creations" from PlayStation Studios, as well as third-party and indie creators.
There have been plenty of rumours in the runup to the PlayStation Showcase, with a potential Metal Gear Solid 3 remake on the cards, as well as hopes for an update on the mystery title that Destiny 2 developer Bungie has been working on since it was acquired by Sony last year (via GamesIndustry.biz).

PlayStation Showcase May 2023: start time
The May 2023 PlayStation Showcase start time is 9pm BST / 4pm EDT / 1pm PDT today, Wednesday, May 24. The runtime is expected to be a little over an hour so buckle up for a beefy show. Historically, PlayStation has a tendency to always go slightly over the runtime and has at least given us the heads up by saying as much in the blog announcement.

PlayStation will be streaming the event on its YouTube channel, as well as its Twitch channel if that’s your preferred method of watching. We've dropped the links below. We'll be sure to embed the stream here on this page, too, as soon as PlayStation makes it available.

PlayStation Showcase May 2023: what to expect
Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Final Fantasy and Silent Hill
The only real first-party PS5 game with a 2023 release window right now is the sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, so we should definitely expect to see what Insomniac has in store for the wall-crawler’s next adventure. All we’ve seen from it so far has been pre-rendered CGI trailers, so some pure gameplay captured on PS5 would be superb. Also sticking with Insomniac, we know the studio is working on a Marvel’s Wolverine game set to release in 2024. This may also be shown.
With Final Fantasy 16 releasing next month on June 22, 2023, it’s essentially certain that PlayStation will remind players on PS5 that it’s incoming with a new look, and possibly give us a date for the promised Final Fantasy 16 demo. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is also due an update in terms of what's going on with it, so it would make sense for the third-party exclusive to show off something at least.
In terms of other third-party PlayStation exclusives, we could also hear more on Death Stranding 2, Baldur's Gate 3, and the Silent Hill 2 remake. Looking at the non-exclusive lineup, there's Mortal Kombat 1, and Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon.
There's a fair chance we hear about Sucker Punch Productions’ next game since it’s the first-party studio next up to the plate as Ghost of Tsushima launched back in 2020. The PS5 remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, meanwhile, is in development hell, so we could get an update on that.
Elsewhere, there's the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake rumours which may finally be put to bed either way, as well as the online Horizon multiplayer project Guerilla Games teased on Twitter. And of course, the next title from Bungie.
PS5 Pro and PlayStation handheld
There have also been whispers of a PS5 Pro and a PlayStation handheld codenamed the Q Lite. Although the latter isn't going to be a fully fledged device like the PS Vita. Instead, industry leaker Tom Henderson describes it as using Remote Play rather than cloud streaming or a dedicated portable device like the Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile the PS5 Pro reportedly has a soft 2024 release date pencilled in, says Henderson.
But there’s sure to be plenty of surprises in store when the PlayStation Showcase debuts next week.
