PlayStation has drawn the ire of many people this summer, but that’s not stopping American gamers from picking the brand as their top choice of console.
A new study by Statista Consumer Insights reveals that, of polled individuals “who regularly play video games,” 46 percent of them play on the PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro, and 27 percent play on PlayStation 4. Not to be forgotten, 12 percent are still gaming on PlayStation 3.
The pool of just 3,200 respondents in the US between the ages of 18 and 64 also showed that many gamers are Nintendo fans, with 33 percent saying they play on Nintendo Switch and 17 percent on Switch 2.
Xbox has some gamers, too, but the highest share of those players is on Xbox One, according to the data, with 23 percent saying they play the last-gen of Microsoft’s console. Then there’s 21 percent on Xbox Series X|S, and 14 percent said they still regularly play Xbox 360.
A lot of the information is pretty interesting, because there seems to be a whole other world out there. People are still playing their Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii U in 2026. That’s difficult to fathom at times, but I suppose it makes sense.
If anything, this goes to show just how wide of a berth there is in US gamers when it comes to regularly gaming. Not everyone can afford the high-end consoles, especially now, but those who do seem to be choosing the PS5. That’s as much to do with brand recognition as it is with games, I think.
Obviously, the small pool of players who responded to the poll from July 2025 to June 2026 does not represent all gamers, but it may reflect a wider trend overall, like how a lot of Nintendo Switch players have not upgraded to the Switch 2 for any number of reasons.
Can Sony’s controversial decision to end physical discs put a dent in their massive player base? Maybe not with PS5, and given the overall popularity and staying power of the brand, it seems like a lot of players will choose the PS6 if they can.
