Almost £60,000 worth of school meal debt in North Ayrshire could be scrapped from Wednesday.
North Ayrshire Labour will move a motion which would wipe out all school meal debt in North Ayrshire.
Plans to scrap the debt comes as the cost of living crisis is set to worsen from October and Labour plan to argue the council should wipe the slate clean for North Ayrshire families.
Labour Councillor Robert Foster will propose the motion on Wednesday.
Robert said: “Household bills are going through the roof and the last thing parents need to worry about is the council chasing them for ‘debt’ associated with the basic principle of feeding kids.
“As a society we should be ensuring that every child is free from hunger, that’s why we should be rolling out free school meals to all as a priority. Ministers in Edinburgh are holding that up, even voting against making it a legal right that every child should receive a school meal.
“But whilst others don’t act, the council should. For a very small sum of money, we can scrap all school meal debt. We should then get on with providing free school meals to all.”
