Plans to turn popular pub used as filming location into home

A popular Caerphilly borough pub which recently closed could be turned into a home.

The Rose and Crown pub, located near Abertridwr, closed its doors in October 2021 due to “unforeseen circumstances” according to staff.

The pub was well-known for its unique location and beautiful views over the Taff and Aber valleys. Located next to St Llan’s church on the mountainside above Abertridwr and also featured on the Sky One's Stella, created by Gavin & Stacey creator Ruth Jones.

However, plans submitted to Caerphilly Council last week could see the pub converted into a house.

According to the plans, the ground floor’s main bar area would become a living room, while the lounge area could be remodelled into an entrance hallway, lounge, and library space.

The pub’s kitchen would become a home study and its downstairs storage areas would make up two bedrooms. Its conservatory would also be converted into a kitchen.

The first floor of the property currently houses a flat with three bedrooms. If the plans go ahead, they would see the creation of a master bedroom in place of the living and kitchen area. The building otherwise would remain largely unchanged.

Many reacted with sadness to news of the pub’s sudden closure, which was posted on its Facebook page on October 4.

The post said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Rose and Crown will be closed until further notice.

“Kindly note that we are not monitoring the activity on this page and apologies for any inconvenience caused.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your custom and support over recent times – we’ll keep you informed of any developments.”

At the time, one person commented: "Such a shame. Lovely owners and staff and delicious Sunday lunch. I hope whatever the reason you’re closed is just a bump in the road."

While another said: "So sorry to hear the sad news. Hope things will get better for the future. Take care and stay well."

The proposals to convert to pub into a home were submitted by a Mr Alun Hobbs of Caerphilly.
