Plans to turn iconic Altrincham town centre building into 68 apartments

Plans have been tabled to turn a town centre office building into 68 apartments.

The owners of Clarendon House in the centre of Altrincham, Citihaus, bought the site in 2018 from Trafford council and Bruntwood Works and now want to transform it.

The developers have sent an application to Trafford council to convert the office block into new apartments, including 12 affordable homes.

By extending the building by two stories, the firm wants to create four studio apartments, 25 one-bedroom flats, 34 two-bedroom flats and five three-bedroom duplexes.

The building was formerly home to Altrincham Library and was built in the 1970s.

Andrew Leaver, director of architects TP Bennett also working on the project said: “These plans show how adaptive reuse can create meaningful places in our historic town centres for people to live.

“Clarendon House is in need of a new lease of life. Our proposal retains the existing structure, which marks the entrance point to Altrincham, with a design-led retention and reappropriation of the vacant office site to provide new homes and a lively retail offering to the streetscape.”

Clarendon House sits within the Stamford Quarter area of Altrincham town centre that is being revamped as part of a joint venture between Trafford council and developers Bruntwood Works.

Plans to overhaul the nearby former Rackham’s building were approved earlier this year too.

Trafford council’s planning department will decide on the plans in due course through its usual processes.
