Plans to turn former Bristol pub into 80-bed care home

Plans have been revealed to transform a former pub into a community based care facility along the A4 Bath Road. Meadow Care Homes has taken on White Hart Lodge in Brislington to propose to build an 80-bed care home and some key-worker flats, along with some public facing uses.

White Hart Lodge has a history stretching back to the early 18th century, where it was used as a coaching inn that was extended in the mid-19th and the mid-twentieth centuries. The building was given a Grade II listing in 1977 and it remained as a community pub until the early 2000s.

It was taken over by the Bristol Performing Arts School in 2010, which was its main use until the school moved to Warmley in 2021. Meadowcare Home currently has a live-in facility in Redland for residents seeking care for dementia.

The proposals, aided by Hadfield+Noblin and Avril Baker Consultancy, demonstrate plans to transform the space into a community based care facility in the centre of Brislington. Some of the features suggested include a coffee bar, massage and hair salon, private therapeutic suits and exercise facilities.

It would see the extension of White Hart Lodge to create 80 beds and key work flats as well as the opening up of the existing listed building. The consultation materials also reference the challenge to access caused by its location along a very busy stretch of the A4 Bath Road.

A publication consultation is now underway for residents, businesses and stakeholders to find out more about the redevelopment. A face-to-face event will be held on site on Tuesday, January 31 from 4-7pm to give residents the chance to find out more about the proposals and give feedback in advance of submitting a planning application to Bristol City Council in early March 2023.

Residents are also invited to complete an online survey to share their views on the project. The public consultation documents can be viewed here.
