Plans to turn an historic 19th building in Cardiff Bay into a new apartment scheme have been revealed.
Owner and developer of the Custom House building, at 56 Bute Street, PropertyIndex, intend to transform the vacate building into a new residential scheme consisting of nine apartments.
The building, which Cardiff-based PropertyIndex acquire last year, has been vacate for more than 25 years.
Subject to planning consent from Cardiff Council work is expected to commence in the autumn. Plans include a roof top extension for the grade II building.
The building, was constructed in 1898 and designed by Henry Tanner who is was also the architect behind the former post office building on Westgate Street in the centre of Cardiff - which now forms part of the Parkgate Hotel. It once served as a government immigrant office.
A spokesperson for PropertyIndex said: “After purchasing Custom House in March 2021, we are pleased to have reached a stage where we have submitted a highly elegant and purposeful application for planning, utilising all this impressive building has to offer within its existing wall structure which has remained untouched and vacant over for 25 years.
“We are looking forward to restoring existing features and welcome the opportunity to bring forward this highly unique and elegant development further complementing the regeneration of Cardiff Bay.”
