Plans to honour Phil Bennett are announced as fans to get chance to pay special tributes

A service of remembrance is to be held for Phil Bennett following his death aged 73.

It will take place at Parc y Scarlets on Friday, June 24, starting at 11am with a public service to follow at Holy Trinity Church, Felinfoel, at 1pm.

A note on Llanelli RFC’s website says those wishing to pay their respects can leave flowers at the ‘Stradey Gates’ at the main entrance to Parc y Scarlets.

One of Wales' greatest-ever players died on Sunday after battling a long illness.

He played 413 games for Llanelli over 15 seasons. He also won 29 caps for Wales and featured in eight Tests for the Lions.

The outpouring of affection for him and grief at his passing has underlined the esteem in which the diminutive genius from Felinfoel was held. It wasn’t just the way he played, with his famed sidestep and ability to ruin an entire defensive system with a mere shake of the hips, but it was also his modesty and humility which appealed to so many, with the ex-fly-half respectful of all he met and never quick to talk about himself.

Thousands are likely to want to pay their respects to him. Further details on the service are likely to be released in due course.
