An American property company has lodged plans to redevelop a Perthshire castle where Queen Victoria and Prince Albert stayed.
Discovery Land Company, owned by American entrepreneur Mike Meldman, bought Taymouth Castle in 2018.
The company has recently lodged several planning applications to Perth and Kinross Council that could see the former hotel extensively renovated.
The home was owned by Lord Breadalbane and hosted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1842. They are said to have used the entire first floor of the castle's west wing as a private apartment.
Discovery Land Company noted the “exceptional architectural quality and historic significance” of the Victoria rooms in the castle.
The property company has submitted applications for “internal alterations” to the Breadalbane Suite, the Prince Albert dressing rooms, Queen Victoria’s bedroom, along with similar changes on the third and second floors of the main tower.
Latest applications also propose a “contemporary pod” room-within-a-room in the Prince Albert that will include a shower and toilet.
The company is also seeking consent to construct a reception building and access path to its lodge at the north of the hotel, used by security staff while the renovation is underway.
The west wing was designed in parts by William Adam around 1733 and was remodelled between 1838 and 1842 by James Gillespie Graham ahead of the royal visit.
The company also submitted plans to repair “significant decay” to its dairy building, following a structural inspection that said the roof required urgent attention that would “affect the structural integrity of the building if left alone”.
