Plans go in for new Aldi off Formby bypass

Formby could soon have a new Aldi after plans were submitted to Sefton Council for approval.

Aldi first revealed plans for the multi-million pound store in January as the discount supermarket launched a consultation with local residents about the scheme, at Moss Side in east Formby.

The supermarket wanted to take over a former garden centre site close to the Formby bypass, revealing plans that could bring 40 new jobs and fill a gap for discount food provision in the area.

One of the issues with the plans was that the site is technically part of the greenbelt, which Aldi said it recongised was a “sensitive issue”.

The site itself is brownfield and has been most recently used to house scrap cars with existing planning consent for residential development.

Following the consultation held earlier this year, Aldi has now submitted an application for the site.

Aldi said its consultation revealed 85% support for the plans with more than 600 unique responses to its consultation with people citing the need for a low-cost, high-quality retailer in Formby, especially in light of the cost-of-living crisis.

Aldi’s Regional Property Director Bryn Richards said: “We’re delighted with the response to our consultation and would like to thank everyone who took the time to let us know their views.

“It is clear that there is local demand for access to a discount food retailer and we’re confident that this previously developed site is the best location for us.

“The scheme would create around 40 local jobs and will enhance pedestrian and cycle connectivity from Formby to the site and surrounding
countryside.”

The application was submitted to Sefton Council on May 4 and will involve demolition of the existing site structures to build the new foodstore – with new vehicle access from the Formby bypass.

The application is currently open for comments before Sefton Council- determine the next steps with Aldi saying it expects a decision to be made in the “coming months.”
