Plans for new tipi marquee bar Lazy Bear unveiled for Newcastle city centre

Plans for a new tipi marquee bar outside Newcastle central station have been put forward.

SD Consultancy North Ltd is behind plans for Lazy Bear, a new bar based in the city centre which would be set beneath a tipi structure, complete with fire pits. Plans submitted to Newcastle’s licensing committee show how the bar would be set up on Station Plaza, Neville Street - the same location as the original Hadrian’s Tipi, which dominated the area before Stack Newcastle was created.

The application is for a new premises licence at the site within a “tipi style marquee” on the forecourt of the station, which would permit the sale of alcohol, as well as live and recorded music to be played, every day from 10am until midnight, with a proposed opening time of 8am every day.

An outline drawing of the plans shows how Lazy Bear could have three entrances, one bar servery area, while two street foods would also have space to trade outside the venue. Room has also been set aside for toilets.

SD Consultancy North Ltd wants to operate the bar from October 1 to January 31 2023, the documents show. The Portsmouth based company launching the new bid for a marquee bar is directed by Steve Davis, the former managing director of SSD Concerts who left the gig promotion company in April 2021 following allegations from former staff over pay and the company’s workplace culture.

Venues and artists, including Sam Fender, Idles and Lanterns on the Lake, cut ties with the company after largely anonymous allegations were posted on the firm’s Instagram account.

At the time, the company and Mr Davis issued strong denials to all claims, but Mr Davis later announced he had stepped down as managing director. He said he had been “publicly tarnished based on several anonymous comments posted online”, adding that he was “sorry for any mistakes I have made along the way.”

Mr Davis is now the sole director of the renamed SSD Industries Ltd company IG Festivals Ltd, which is registered at the same Portsmouth address as SD Consultancy North Ltd.
