Plans for new private school at Knowsley community centre

A new private school could soon be opening in Knowsley.

The school, based at Huyton with Roby sea cadets off Rydal Road, is designed to specifically cater for neuro divergent children according to planning documents submitted to Knowsley Council.

Applying to Knowsley Council for change of use permission for the air cadet building to include use of a school, Arts Education, stressed it would not be a “behavioural school.”

According to a supporting statement submitted to the council the independent school, which would provide teaching for up to 14 pupils, offers a “bespoke curriculum” to help students who have struggled with friendships and faced emotional barriers to education.

The statement added that Arts Education would be a “very quiet, calm and nurturing school that has carefully selected the cohort of pupils” to ensure a positive dynamic.

If permission is granted, the school would have 12 members of staff and teach children with special educational needs from the ages of 11 to 16, offering GCSE subjects focusing on a creative curriculum.

Arts Education said it is helping provide financial security for the sea cadets unit, called TS IRON DUKE, through being based at the building. The company says it has already invested in IT equipment, secured £8,000 funding and will be helping on an ongoing basis to ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of the building.

One member of the public has so far objected to application, which has also been subject to consultation with the council’s parks department, environmental health and highways departments

The plans are now awaiting a decision by officers as to whether the change of use can go ahead, with the school stating it intends to open its doors to pupils from September.
