Plans for new 315-place primary school in East Leake take step forward

Plans for a new primary school in East Leake have taken a step closer to approval. The primary school would have capacity for more than 300 pupils and would be built on Rempstone Road alongside a nursery in the town, with plans for it to open in September next year.

Full plans were revealed for Millside Spencer Academy by Nottinghamshire County Council earlier this year, with hopes it will serve the new housing developments to the edge of East Leake adjacent the site and the village itself. It is being planned in order to fulfil the need created by nearby housing developments such as The Skylarks estate, and developers say it will "satisfy projected demand for primary school places in East Leake".

A report to Rushcliffe Borough Council states: "There is an educational requirement for a new primary school at East Leake from September 2022. This is to be satisfied by the permanent provision of a new school in which outline planning permission has already been granted.

"It is anticipated that the proposed school would be operational from September 2023 and in the interim, the school place demand will be met with a 120 Place Temporary School Learning Village in which planning permission has already been granted.

"The school would be built with capacity for 315 primary pupils and a 26 place nursery to satisfy projected demand for primary school places in East Leake. The school building would be over two storeys."

The green light for the plan to create the "learning village" in Sheepwash Way, East Leake for 12 months ahead of the permanent school being built was given approval by Nottinghamshire County Council's policy committee in December 2021. There were fears that this school could cause traffic issues in the village and unleash a "year of hell" on those who live nearby.

It is recommended that Rushcliffe Borough Council does not object to the proposal, subject to a number of conditions - East Leake Parish Council also has no objections to the plans. The borough council's planning committee will meet on Thursday, May 12.
