Plans for a new multimillion-pound station in Caerphilly town have been revealed. The new building would be located on the site of the current Caerphilly train and bus interchange and is part of the council’s Caerphilly 2035 regeneration project.
The council is working alongside Transport for Wales and the Design Commission for Wales on the station with the hope it will be ready for use by the end of 2025. The project could cost between £30m and £40m.
It is aimed that this part of the development will link with the £5m investment by Cadw into Caerphilly Castle to create a “world class heritage attraction” and turn the town into a major destination for tourists.

According to the potential plans, the old ticket office above the railway station could be demolished and the road bridge replaced. The old ticket office, which houses a number of businesses, is not listed by Cadw.
The road and bridges are suffering from a “loss of structure due to corrosion”, the plans state. They will need to be strengthened or replaced. Meanwhile the old ticket office “does not meet the sustainability ambitions for a new interchange building”.
A Caerphilly County Borough Council press release stated the proposed interchange will “transform the way people travel to and from Caerphilly,” and added: It will effortlessly connect people with trains, buses, taxis and active travel options.”
Councillor Sean Morgan, leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, said: “The Caerphilly Interchange project is one of several exciting developments that formulates the Caerphilly 2035 masterplan – our blueprint to transforming Caerphilly town centre.”
Residents are being asked for their views on how the interchange development could look as part of a four-week consultation.
There will be a number of engagement sessions run by the council on:
• Wednesday, October 12 at the bus station: 3pm to 4.30pm.
• Friday, October 14 at Caerphilly Library: 9.30am to 11am.
• Wednesday, October 19 at Coffi Vista: 2pm to 3.30pm.
