Plans for Grade II listed church to be turned into nine apartments

A planning application was submitted to convert a Grade II listed church into nine apartments.

The former United Reform Church in Blundellsands has been empty since October 2019. Located at 31 Warren Road, the church along with its attached hall is located in the Blundellsands Conservation Area.

Winter Melia Developments Ltd now wants to transform the church into a nine-bedroomed apartment building. Seven of which will be three-bed apartments with the remaining two four-bed apartments.

According to a report submitted to Sefton Council, it said that changes would need to be made as part of this proposed conversion. These include, insertion of new windows and doors, replacement of the windows to the hall, insertion of conservation roof lights and the retention of stain glass windows and addition of secondary glazing

A heritage report submitted to Sefton Council said: "The current proposals represent an important opportunity to convert and reuse a building of national importance and halt its continued deterioration.

"The proposed alterations are necessary to convert this property in a viable manner, with limited external alterations to sustain the character and appearance of the Conservation Area. To survive, the building needs a viable long-term use which is consistent with conserving the elements of high significance.

"The building will remain as a good example of a church built in response to the growing community of Blundellsands. As a well to do seaside suburb at the turn of the 20th century and despite the change of use, the building will continue to maintain this historic interest and status as a local landmark."
