A developer has been given the go ahead to build 382 new homes as part of a major regeneration scheme on the northern edge of Bristol.
South Gloucestershire District Council has given its approval to housebuilder Bellway South West, which is teaming up with fellow construction firm Taylor Wimpey on the huge new project on land off Cribbs Causeway.
The joint venture is aiming to deliver a total of 760 homes, which could be located within a five-minute drive of the nearby out-of-town shopping centre.
Bellway’s part of the scheme, to be known as Berwick Green, with construction of the first homes set to begin on site later this year.
In addition to housing, the two companies have said the project will bring an investment of £12.5m in local services including education and highways.
Tim Lund, sales director for Bellway South West, said: “We take pride in improving areas and creating opportunities for local residents, and we believe that is exactly what our Berwick Green development will do.
“There’s an urgent need to address the shortfall in the UK’s housing supply, and demand is particularly high in Bristol, one of the country’s fastest growing and most desirable cities.
“Our partnership with Taylor Wimpey will enable us to meet this challenge by delivering hundreds of new homes in a key location just off the M5 and within a 30-minute drive of the city centre."
A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey said its own proposals for the first phase of development at Berwick Green include 244 homes and it was "gearing up to start work as soon as we receive planning approval."
The partnership acquired the site last year for an undisclosed sum, in land deal that represented the biggest ever acquisition by Bellway’s South West division.
