Planning permission for more than 850 homes at a site on the Oscar Traynor Road in Coolock has been sought in a major ramp up of plans to redevelop the site.
The development will bring forward plans that have been in the pipeline for almost a decade. The Glenveagh Homes proposal passed a vote by Dublin City Council back in November 2021.
This next step of seeking planning permission will now bring the proposal a step further to reality. As previously reported by Dublin Live, under the plans 40% of the units going to social housing, 40% would be cost rental housing and 20% would be affordable purchase.
Despite being approved by the majority of councillors last year, the plans were opposed by Sinn Fein, Social Democrats, People Before Profit and some independents. Sinn Fein councillors said this deal will cause "the less well off will be squeezed out".
In a joint statement, councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha and Larry O’Toole said: “We are disappointed at the outcome of the vote and the lost opportunity to deliver a Council-led development with truly affordable homes for purchase and to rent, as well as Council housing. The Glenveagh deal does not provide affordability for renters and purchasers. Once again the less well off will be squeezed out, especially those just above the income threshold to qualify for social housing."
Homes will be made up of 240 houses and 613 apartments and duplex units, the Irish Times reports. The development will reach up to six storeys in height.
It is expected that construction will begin late next year following approval. If all goes to plan the first houses will be completed by the end of 2024.
