Plan your February: CP has you covered on the major events this month

In an effort to help clients better plan coverage, The Canadian Press will move a lookahead advisory at the start of each month to highlight some of the major upcoming events we're covering. Here's a look at what is coming up in February:
Black history month

Feb. 1: Trial continues for teen charged with first-degree murder in death of Calgary police Sgt. Andrew Harnett.

Feb 1-21: Trial of former B.C. legislature clerk Craig James. 

Feb. 2: World Cup soccer qualifier - Canada at El Salvador, 9 p.m. ET

Feb. 2: Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem, along with senior deputy governor Carolyn Rogers, will appear by videoconference before the standing Senate committee on banking, trade and commerce.

Feb. 2: Groundhog day

Feb. 4: Statistics Canada to release its labour force survey for January.

Feb. 4-20: Beijing Winter Olympics

Feb. 5: B.C. Liberal Leadership contest results. 

Feb. 8: Statistics Canada to release its international merchandise trade figures for December.

Feb. 8: Byelection in the Northwest Territories in the electoral district of Tu NedhéWiilideh

Feb. 8: Senate of Canada resumes sitting after winter holiday break.

Feb. 8: Lionel Gelber jury to announce shortlist of five books for non-fiction prize

Feb. 8: Oscar nominations to be announced

Feb. 9: Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem to give a speech to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Feb. 9: Statistics Canada releases first tranche of data from the 2021 census. This release focuses on population and dwelling counts.

Feb. 9: Sentencing expected for Kingston, Ont., teen who pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges including possession of explosive material and counselling someone to detonate a bomb. 

Feb. 10: Verdict expected in case of Cory Fenn, who has pleaded not guilty to three counts of second-degree murder for the 2018 deaths of his ex-girlfriend and her two children in Ajax, Ont.

Feb. 11: Online court hearing to approve settlement of a class-action lawsuit against the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and a former teacher and photographer.

Feb. 15: Canadian Screen Awards nominations to be announced

Feb. 16: Statistics Canada to release consumer price index for January and its wholesale sales numbers and monthly survey of manufacturing for December.

Feb. 16: Court hearing for Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard, who is awaiting trial on sexual assault charges in Toronto. 

Feb. 18: Statistics Canada to release its retail sales figures for December.

Feb. 21: Ontario government plans to further ease pandemic restrictions. 

Feb. 22: A new session of the Alberta legislature kicks off with a speech from the throne.

Feb. 22: Ontario legislature reconvenes. 

Feb. 22: Coroner’s inquest begins in Edmundston, N.B., into police shooting of Chantel Moore.

Feb. 22-24: Public proceedings begin for Mass Casualty Commission conducting inquiry into 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting.

Feb. 24: Alberta's finance minister tables the 2022 budget.

Feb. 28: Mass Casualty Commission conducting inquiry into 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting continues public hearings.
