Plan to create 'safer' streets that 'benefit everyone' in Wirral

People who live in an area of the Wirral are to be consulted as part of a project that will create "safer" streets.

Homeowners in Bebington, specifically those living between Town Lane, Heath Road and Mayer Park, will be able to take part in a survey that will gather their views on the neighbourhoods in which they live. The survey is the beginning of a three-stage process to create safer streets that will benefit "everyone in the area".

The project is being lead by Sustrans, a charity who aim to create "healthier places and happier people, in conjunction with Wirral Council and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. The next stage of the project, named By Ours, will see Sustrans designers turn the public's consultation into pragmatic designs that will improve on various aspects of street life, and will take place this Autumn.

Once the designs are created, Bebington will be once again consulted to improve on them before they are showcased in the Spring of next year. The charity has already consulted primary and secondary school children for their views on what could improve the streets they live and study in.

Project officer Lou Henderson said: “We’re very excited to launch By Ours in Bebington.

"This survey is a chance for local residents to have their say. By Ours is a fantastic chance for local people to get involved and shape the way their neighbourhood looks and feels in the future.

“We aim to work with all sections of the community to ensure that our streets are working for different age groups and abilities, including families, ethnic minorities and disabled people.

“Everyone’s views are important and will help us to understand what local people need to make their streets feel safer, healthier and more attractive. Please do get involved and give your opinions in our postal or online survey.

"There will also be lots of opportunities to meet our friendly team in person and contribute your ideas in workshops and discussions.”

Alan Evans, Wirral Council’s Director of Regeneration and Place, said: “This is an exciting project working with the local community to create better and safer streets. I would urge people to get involved, fill in the survey and make the most of the drop-in events so that this project benefits everyone in the area.”

People who live in Bebington can find the survey at by-ours-bebington.org.uk. A physical copy will also be sent in the post to people living in the area.
