Plan for more 20mph roads in Wirral ‘not attack on cars’

More roads in Wirral are set to have 20mph limits under plans designed to make the borough safer and quieter.

A timetable for the first new batch of roads where cars will be limited to 20mph is set to be revealed in June. Cllr Liz Grey, chair of the council’s Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said: “It [bringing in more 20mph roads] will make things safer, reduce greenhouse gas [emissions] and make streets more pleasant and attractive places to hang out, use and play in.

“The plan is not just about 20mph limits, it is also about providing much better access to cycling and creating quiet neighbourhoods with lower traffic levels. We want to move some areas back to [traffic] levels seen in the days before cars dominated.”

More Wirral roads are set to adopt a 20mph speed limit after a motion put forward by Cllr Grey to focus on 20mph zones among other road safety goals as an "urgent priority" was passed at a meeting of the committee she chairs last September. Cllr Grey added: “I want to see fewer children stuck indoors on their devices and we need to get back to a less polluted, noisy world.” But the Labour councillor wanted to be clear that the plan was not an “attack on cars”.

Cllr Grey added: “We’ve got to have a balance and not make life impossible for people with cars. This is not an attack on cars, we have previously been planning things around cars and have sort of forced people into cars but the priority now should be to make it more attractive for people to walk and cycle.”

On 20mph limits, Cllr Grey said residents will see more sections of road with this limit in place in the next couple of years but it will depend on where they live.
