‘Place for everyone’: London Mayor shares festival images from Iftar to Diwali

London Mayor Sadiq Khan shared images from a large open Iftar gathering at Trafalgar Square on Tuesday, highlighting the city’s diversity and unity during the final week of Ramadan.

Posting pictures of celebrations, including Easter, Diwali, Vaisakhi and Chanukah, he wrote, " Here's an Iftar on Trafalgar Square. And here’s Easter, Diwali, Vaisakhi and Chanukah. London is, and will always be, a place for everyone. #UnityOverDivision

The gathering was part of the Ramadan Tent Project’s Open Iftar programme, with around 3,000 people attending the closing event of the Ramadan Festival 2026 at Trafalgar Square.

The event brought together people from different communities for a shared meal as Ramadan nears its end. It is considered one of the largest open Iftar gatherings in the Western world.

The Open Iftar programme, launched in 2013, is held at multiple locations across the UK. This year, events also took place at venues including AFC Wimbledon and Horizon 22 in London.

The evening included speeches by community leaders and public figures, along with a Qur’an recitation and a nasheed performance after the meal.

The gathering focused on themes of unity, inclusion and shared community experience, with organisers saying the initiative welcomes people regardless of faith or background.
