As torrential rain battered their SUV, a team of intrepid researchers found themselves face-to-face with a horizon-spanning funnel cloud looming ominously in the distance.

The initial calm was soon shattered by a barrage of metallic impacts as hailstones began to pummel the vehicle's roof.
