The Road That Decides Before You Do
The road into Pin Valley does not ease you in. From Kaza, the last town in Spiti with a functioning ATM and mobile signal, the route to the valley floor drops and climbs in ways that make the vehicle feel like a suggestion rather than a machine. The Himalayan terrain here is not the green, forested kind that softens the idea of altitude. It is bare. Grey-brown ridges, loose scree, a river the colour of cold steel running below. The Pin River cuts through this cold desert the way a thought cuts through silence, quietly, without asking permission.
