Pilot dead after plane crash in bushland south of Townsville

A 67-year-old Townsville man has died after a plane crashed in north Queensland.

The light plane went down over Shirbourne, a rural location south-west of Townsville early on Sunday.

Police say the crash site is in rugged bushland in the vicinity of Bahr Road and only accessible by foot due to thick foliage and steep terrain.

Authorities began searching for the aircraft at around 9.30am, when it was overdue to land at Ayr.

Police said the wreckage was spotted by a rescue chopper and the pilot was found dead at the scene.

No one else was on board.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The scene will be guarded overnight, with investigations to continue tomorrow.
