Piers Morgan takes brutal swipe at Arsenal with 'the truth' ahead of Nottingham Forest clash

Piers Morgan has laid into Arsenal ahead of their clash with Nottingham Forest, claiming Mikel Arteta’s side "bottled it" in the Premier League title race with Man City.

The Gunners were strong favourites to become champions for a large part of the season, but their form has taken a big dip and Pep Guardiola’s side have taken full advantage.

Man City now look almost certain to win the title, being four points clear of Arsenal, who have two matches left to play while Guardiola’s side have three matches to go.

Arsenal will head to the City Ground to face Forest this weekend demoralised, after a 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday pretty much handed Man City the title.

And Gunners fan Morgan has taken a swipe, telling talkSPORT: “I don’t care what Arsenal fans are trying to say or excuse it saying we’re the youngest squad along with Southampton, who got relegated so why boast about having the youngest squad, or that we got tired playing one tournament when City were in everything. Really? Tiredness.

“I’ve heard all the excuses, but the truth is we bottled it. There’s no other way to describe what has happened in the last few weeks. We were eight points clear and eight points to go and we should have won the league.

“I will always believe that. This might be the best chance we get. A lot of teams are going to be strengthening and already are. Look at Liverpool improving by the minute.

“I think next season will be ferociously competitive and there will be seven or eight teams competing for that top four. This was our chance.

“I don’t know what it was but that performance against Brighton was absolutely pathetic. I’m sorry, you’re chasing for the title and even if you’ve got a tiny sniff of the title and you do that to Brighton at home, who just got beaten 5-1 at home by Everton, I thought it was truly pathetic.

“Yes we’ve had a fantastically good season right to this point of about four or five weeks ago, yes we were filled with hope, yes we’ve come on a long way from last year when frankly I would have got rid of Arteta as we had two very lean seasons with him in charge and I’ve admitted my error on that.

“But you cannot bottle the league in the way we’ve just done and I’m afraid we did. It may sound harsh and I don’t mean to be harsh to the players and I’m sure they’ve got their reasons, but that performance at the weekend was one of the worst I’ve seen given the context as an Arsenal fan ever.”
