Piers Morgan has jumped to Phillip Schofield's defence on social media, telling the public and the media that it's "time to stop" the pile-on of scrutiny he's currently experiencing.
58-year-old Piers, who is a former presenter of Good Morning Britain, showed his support for Phillip after the disgraced star opened up about his affair in interviews with the BBC and the Sun.
It was revealed last month that Phillip had been in a relationship with a 'much younger' male colleague whilst still married to Stephanie Lowe, and he's faced huge criticism from those in the industry.
But Piers has urged people to stop this, writing on Twitter: "Unless Phillip Schofield’s ex-lover contradicts his version of events to @TheSun & BBC, then it’s time to stop this relentless persecution of a guy who’s lost everything and looks right on the edge to me. He doesn’t seem to have committed any crime, and he’s not a Govt minister."
Wales Online reports that several people responded to Piers’ tweet, sharing their own thoughts on the situation.
One person wrote: “The best thing he could've done was to come out of hiding and answer questions.”
A second person said: “Totally agree.” And a third person wrote: “I personally think the media really should back off, it's getting too much now and way out of proportion.”
However, some other people weren't convinced by Piers' statement, with one Twitter critic pointing out: "This is the guy who led the witch hunt for Megan Markle and said she was lying when she admitted that she felt suicidal."
The backlash over the controversial host's take on the Duchess of Sussex's Oprah Winfrey interview led to him storming off Good Morning Britain and leaving for good.
Piers’ tweet comes after Phillip shared his side of the story with the public. In an interview with BBC journalist Amol Rajan, he said: "Do you want me to die? Because that is where I am. I have lost everything."
Phillip also compared himself to the late TV presenter Caroline Flack, who took her own life in 2020. He apologised, numerous times, to the runner with whom he had the affair with.
His former co-host Holly is set to return to the This Morning sofa next week accompanied by Josie Gibson.
