A comedian and activist has claimed she was 'censored' before appearing on TalkTV show Piers Morgan Uncensored and wasn't allowed to challenge his "obsession" about Meghan Markle.
Kate Smurthwaite, 46, has claimed to The Mirror how producers warned her certain things were off the agenda when she appeared on the former Good Morning Britain host's no-holds-barred talk show.
Kate had been invited to appear on the show as Piers was going to share more thoughts on Meghan Markle.
The political comedian has claimed that on the morning of the show that producers had asked her not to repeat thoughts she had aired about Piers previously, especially that she believes he has a "nasty attitude" and a "childish obsession" with Meghan.
Piers had fired back at Kate on Twitter, saying that after speaking to producers, he is confident that she was not censored before appearing on the show.
He tweeted: "I just checked and nobody tried to censor you - we don’t censor guests, that’s the point of the show."
TalkTV were also contacted for comment.
Speaking to the Mirror about the show's producers, Kate said: "They were looking forward to having me on. The only thing was…they’d like me not to mention a couple of the things I had said in our earlier conversation."
Kate said that this was about how she felt Piers spent too much time commenting on the every move of Meghan.
She continued to claim: "They didn’t want me criticising or seeking to explain his vindictive obsession with her."
The comedian claimed that there was only one person to blame for her being told what she has claimed she was told not to say, and that was Piers himself.
She wrote: "I don’t blame the producer. The job of producing a show like this is 95% about 'censoring'.
"By which I mean selecting which voices and viewpoints will be aired and hence, inevitably, which ones won’t."
Kate added: "This makes Piers Morgan’s interest in free speech appear purely hypocritical, in my view.
"If, as he has subsequently claimed on Twitter, there was no effort to censor me, his producers would not have warned me beforehand to not get "too personal" with Piers when discussing the topic of Meghan."
Kate has spoken out after a Twitter spat with the TV host after she claimed on social media that she had been "censored" before appearing on the show.
She wrote on Twitter, alongside a selfie of her holding a bottle of wine she was given after the show: "Today in #MyLifeIsWeird I’m sat in the green room for Piers Morgan UNCENSORED (the producer has just told me things NOT to say on air LOL #ActuallyCensored ) when the other guest arrives who will be on for the second half of the show. It’s JOAN COLLINS…
"…She is escorted to a private dressing room opposite and immediately handed a glass of Dom Perignon. She declines and asks if she could have white wine instead. I generously offer to dispose of the Dom P to save on food waste in the middle of a cost of living crisis…
"…Sadly a member of the production crew has got in first and nabbed it. After I tell Piers that the Tories are awful and we should get rid of the monarchy I return to the green room to find that Joan’s personal butler has heard about my hilarious joke/alcohol problem and…
"…brought me a bottle of wine to take home to make it up to me. Bottoms up eh?!!"
Piers Morgan saw the thread on Twitter and jumped in to defend his producers, claiming that Kate had not been censored before her appearance.
He wrote: "I just checked and nobody tried to censor you - we don’t censor guests, that’s the point of the show."
Kate snapped back at Piers, writing: "Yes I was. Great have me on again and I’ll say all the things I was told not to say."
