Pico Lopes' Cabo Verde on brink of AFCON last 16 after Comoros upset Ghana

Cabo Verde will have, at worst, a 50/50 chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the 2021 AFCON after Ghana suffered a shock elimination to Comoros.

The Black Stars were on the wrong end of one of the biggest upsets in their history as the small island nation, ranked 131 in the world, ran out 3-2 winners on the final day of Group C.

Ghana fought back from 2-0 down after losing Andre Ayew to a red card midway through the first half in between goals from El Fardou Ben Nabouhane and Ahmed Mogni.

Goals from Richmond Boakye and Alexander Dijku looked to have turned the tide and another goal would have seen them progress on goals scored.

Instead, it was Mogni who bagged his second goal, and Comoros’ third, three minutes from time to secure a famous win over a side ranked a full 79 places above them.

The result means that Cabo Verde need just one of the three remaining groups to go their way, with Group D set to finish up tomorrow.

A second-half Garry Rodrigues strike secured third place for the Blue Sharks as they held hosts Cameroon to a draw, with Rovers defender Lopes named man of the match .

Even should all three remaining teams finish ahead of Cabo Verde, their identical record to Malawi means that lots would be drawn to decide the final qualifier.

Guinea-Bissua face already-qualified Nigeria and Egypt face Sudan tomorrow evening, with each of the three remaining sides all in contention if they can reach the four-point mark.

In Group E, all four of Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone and Algeria can finish third on four points, while in Group F, Gambia, Mali and Tunisia are all in contention.
