The 75th anniversary of the Windrush’s arrival in Britain from the Caribbean was marked with a special film on the Piccadilly Lights screens.
The Cultural Institute of Radical Contemporary Arts, in collaboration with ES magazine and the Black Cultural Archives, showed the 10-minute film last night, which featured Windrush Elders telling their stories of arrival.
Among those interviewed were 98-year-old Uriah Esson and Ruth Roberts, 83.
The Londoners who gathered in Piccadilly Circus included four of the six Windrush Elders who stood together to watch themselves on the film.
The HMT Empire Windrush docked on June 22, 1948 at Tilbury Docks in Essex, bringing people from the Caribbean to help fill post-war labour shortages.
The King was among those hailing their “immeasurable” impact.
