Photos show devastating aftermath of motorway bus fire

New photos show the scene of devastation on a motorway near Wigan after a bus fire.

Traffic was stopped on the westbound side of the motorway, which connects the town to Merseyside, at around 3pm today.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze, with every passenger disembarking safely.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) told the Liverpool Echo: "MFRS was called to a bus fire on the M58 shortly before 2.45pm today (Tuesday, February 15).

At the height of the fire, three fire engines from MFRS attended as well as two appliances from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

"On arrival crews found a double decker bus to be well alight on the eastbound carriageway, approximately one mile before the Kirkby junction.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using high pressure hose reel jets to tackle the fire.”

Now, police have confirmed that there were no injuries in the inferno, adding: “Our Merseyside colleagues dealt with bus fire on M58 earlier, this started out as a double decker, thankfully everyone got off the bus safely and no one was injured.”

Photos accompanying the tweet from North West Motorways Police showed a burned-out shell of the bus, barely recognisable at first glance.
