Primary schoolers Emily Starreveld and Alice Checkley do almost everything together.
They dance together, they have dinner together, they go shopping together and have their birthday parties together.
That's why dressing up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr Seuss' The Cat in the Hat for Book Week felt like the perfect fit.
"We are very like them, we can go very nuts sometimes," Alice said.
The best friends joined the rest of St Therese's Primary School in New Lambton for the annual Book Week parade on Wednesday August 26.
Both love reading, with Alice picking Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett as her favourites, and Emily picking The Secret Garden, also by Hodgson Burnett.
"They are interesting and written by good authors," Alice said.
From 2027's incoming kindergarten cohort to year 6s, students chose their favourite literary characters.
Year 3 student Florence Farrell spent three full weekends working on her Mystery Machine van from Scooby-Doo, equipped with its own bell.
"We had to put the wood together and then paint it," she said.
"My dad and I really like the movies."
Finnlay Steele and Ivie Cucumanovski both chose to be Angelina from the book and television show Angelina Ballerina.
"She is very talented," Ivie said.
Principal Sallyanne Stanbridge said students got to enjoy a living library during the morning where teachers shared stories with the children.
"It's always a great opportunity for our children to come together and celebrate together and for our older children to celebrate with our younger children," she said.
Speers Point Public School also got in the Book Week spirit with a morning parade and a talk from children's author Dub Leffler later in the week.
Year 5 students Willow Dooley, Madison Lewington, Eadie Maurer and Madison Tye decided on a Teletubbies group costume.
"It has been a nice kids' show for a long time and we just think it's a great thing to do the Teletubbies for little kids," Willow said.
She said her favourite book was Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney because she liked reading about what mischief the characters got up to.
"I like that reading creates an image in your head and you feel like you've gone to a totally different place," Willow said.
The friends said they loved seeing all the fun creations that their classmates made.
Sisters Sofiya Hockley and Anastasia Hockley dressed up as characters from The Lord of the Rings.
"I love dragons, they are very cool and smart," Sofiya said.
Friends Phoebe Douglas and Addy Darr dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.
"My favourite part is when she throws the bucket of water on the witch," Addy said.
