It was a rematch 31 years in the making as the Mayfield West Boomerangs met Newcastle Baseball's powerhouse team, the Belmont Seagulls, in the code's grand final on Saturday.
It was the first time since 1993 that the Boomerangs had appeared in the grand final, where they met the Seagulls and won. Entering the weekend's clash, they hoped history would repeat.
Mayfield West's captain-coach Joel Pettigrew told the Newcastle Herald late last week that the meeting would be the highlight of his playing career after the team fought hard to turn around a languishing spell near the bottom of the table.
Though Boomerangs put on a gallant display at the weekend after a hard-fought season, the competition heavyweights Belmont took home the chocolates in a 5-1 victory.
Belmont also claimed the second-grade title, defeating Toronto 12-6.
