Photographer Daniel Malikyar: From LA subculture to remote Afghanistan

Cover image: arts24 © FRANCE 24

Afghan-American photographer Daniel Malikyar talks to arts24 about his new photography book, "Afghanistan". It is his most personal project yet. From his perspective as the son of Afghan immigrants, he documents remote communities in the country.

Malikyar also has an extensive body of work including shooting music videos and photography of stars such as Snoop Dogg, Drake and Migos. He says his approach to those portraits is similar to those of his Afghanistan series. The photographer also tells us about his "Weed Nuns" series – a suite of black and white images of a fringe religious group of women in LA who grow their own cannabis. The series will be developed further at Art Basel in Miami this year.
