Phoenix Park Great Ireland Run organisers apologise after major gaffe results in race falling short

The organisers of a much anticipated 10k run in Dublin have apologised after runners were misdirected to a shorter route in a major gaffe.

Thousands descend upon Phoenix Park for the Great Ireland Run on Sunday. Many runners thought they had hit their personal best with two thinking they had broken the world record.

However, they were disappointed to find there was a mistake on the route that cut around 1.5km off the original distance. Many took to Twitter to express their anger and disappointment, especially after it emerged the runners had been misdirected to a route that went uphill.

One person said: "The Great Ireland 8.6k. Not only was the distance cut short but we had to run UP that frickin hill."

Another participant said: "Was really proud about finishing the Great Ireland 10k run this morning in under 50mins. Then found out a steward made a mistake and we actually only ran 8.6km. Still a personal best."

A third person said: "(Not so) Great Ireland Run this morning. What should have been 10k ended up being 8.6k due to stewards sending people the wrong way.

"Still, the record books will show I pb’d my 10k time and that’s what matters."

Athletics Ireland issued an apology for the "unforeseen circumstances". A spokesperson said: "Athletics Ireland and the event organiser Dublin City Harriers wish to apologise to all participants for the unforeseen circumstances that led to yesterday’s Great Ireland Run (incorporating the national 10k championship) being less than the specified distance.

"Athletics Ireland and Dublin City Harriers continue to engage on this matter and all event participants will be contacted again in the coming days when further information becomes available.

"We thank all parties for their patience and once again we apologise to all participants."
