Philly McMahon hits back at Dublin unrest speculation as relegation nears

Philly McMahon claims Dessie Farrell is a victim of the Premier League ‘sack the manager’ mentality.

McMahon has backed Farrell, claiming the abuse which has come the Dublin manager’s way is “so harsh”. Dublin haven’t managed a win in their first four league games in 2022, with the manager coming under fire from a section of fans.

If Kildare were to win in Armagh on Saturday night and Dublin lose to Tyrone the following day, the capital side will be relegated to Division 2.

McMahon also pointed a finger at the media coverage of Dublin and Farrell as he said: “You are the ones writing about it. It is obviously selling.

“I think it’s so harsh when you look at it. Even if you look at the top five counties competing for an All-Ireland this year, he has won more than them in the last two years and none of their heads are getting called for.

“There are managers there longer than Dessie that haven’t won anything.

“I just think it’s that thing that’s being passed on through a successful management team. There is a pressure and a perception that this is what you need to produce.

“The mandate of the manager of the Dublin team should be just to basically create the best performing environment for these lads to excel.

“That’s ultimately what the management should be there to do. If that’s got the potential to win All-Irelands, then evenbetter. Great.”

Philly McMahon and Electric Ireland launched Darkness Into Light 2022, the Pieta fundraising event to help provide support for those in suicidal distress.
