Phillies slugger Bryce Harper interestingly credited his Tuesday night home run against the Angels to WIP-FM Philadelphia sports radio caller “Chuck from Mt. Airy,” whom Harper claims “fired him up” with words of motivation on the radio hours earlier.
Fast forward to Thursday. Harper was making a regularly scheduled appearance with afternoon drive hosts Jon Marks and Ike Reese when Chuck called in once again.
“Thank you for letting me get on this boat you just created to ride this wave,” Chuck told Harper, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “It’s been a great last couple of days, and next to my kids being born, this has been the greatest moments of my life. So I appreciate you, man, and I think you for being a great Phillie, for coming on here listening to us, and shouting me out, out of the blue, for real.”
Harper seemed to genuinely appreciate the words from Chuck.
“I appreciate it, Chuck,” Harper said. “We’re all a family. You guys pull for us. We pull for everybody. I appreciate you so much, and thanks for the words. Thanks for being kind, and I really appreciate that. Thank you.”
Following Tuesday night’s win, Harper explained that he listens to WIP on the way to the stadium on weekday afternoons, and he referenced Chuck in particular.
“He calls in a lot,” Harper told reporters after the game. “He was talking about our team, talking about me and stuff, and I walked into the training room and was like, ‘I’m going to go deep tonight for Chuck.’ Because that guy had me fired up, man.”
An unlikely bromance has been struck between the Phillies slugger and a suburban Phillies fan, making for a great story around the City of Brotherly Love this week.
