Philippe Clement reacts to news he'll have money to bolster Rangers squad in January

Philippe Clement has suggested that the Rangers hierarchy may address why recruitment throughout the summer proved a challenge in the near future.

The Rangers boss was speaking a day after stand-in chairman, John Gilligan, promised him extra funds to bolster his squad when the transfer window opens again in January.

The Light Blues endured a high turnover during the close-season, with several experienced star's leaving the club, and subsequently being replaced by younger, project players.

Clement has received scrutiny for a below-par start to the domestic season yet remains under contract at Ibrox until 2028 after penning at the beginning of August, and Gilligan is determined to back the Rangers manager during the forthcoming transfer window's.

"The manager has brought in some good, exciting young players," said Gilligan. "He's trying to take the age of the squad down, trying to get the trading model correct and I think this is the moment where we hopefully back the manager.

"I'll put myself on the line here and say we are backing this manager. This man has made a lot of changes in the background, we're starting to see that coming and we just look forward to the weeks and months ahead.

"There will be [money for Clement to spend in January]. I think with any manager at any football club, if you can sell and make a profit then it helps with the buying.

"It doesn't depend on it but it certainly adds to it and helps with the whole opportunity of improving.

"We keep talking about the player trading model because ideally we want to be able to bring in players and get them to play properly for the team and do well, but hopefully we sell them on and reinvest.

"We'll have accounts coming out quite soon and at the AGM, it will become apparent that the financial sustainability is solid."

Discussing the topic of recruitment prior to Rangers' first UEFA Europa League match of the new campaign against Malmö, Clement stated: "It’s important and it's necessary. It was not easy in the summer, we talked about that, maybe the people in the club will talk about that later on, in the next couple of months also, about that situation.

"Of course, as a manager you hope to get more funds in to do the right thing for the club, but with the resources that were there, I think everybody is starting to see that a lot of good things have been made. And it's now interesting to work with that and to focus on that. And then, of course, to plan towards January, what we are doing already, and to plan towards next summer.

"We're also busy with that, but that's our job and with recruitment to do. It's important to have also money to do the right things for the club."
