Aftersun outfit Tango and A Private War producer Kamala Films have announced their collaboration on an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane thriller short story, 'A Bostonian,' with Philip Barantini set to direct. The short story, penned by the acclaimed author of 'Shutter Island' and 'Mystic River,' revolves around the world of antique dealers and estate sales.
The narrative follows Nathaniel Dodson, a reserved rare book dealer fixated on collecting rejection letters due to his troubled past of abandonment. Rumors swirl around his possession of a valuable first edition of 'Tamerlane and Other Poems' by A Bostonian (Edgar Allen Poe), just as a mysterious woman claiming to be his long-lost sister enters his life. As their relationship unfolds, hidden truths come to light, revealing a web of deception.
Barantini, known for his work on the drama thriller 'Accused' for Netflix, will not only direct but also serve as an executive producer through his production company, It's All Made Up Productions. His upcoming project, 'Adolescence,' a crime drama series featuring Stephen Graham, is set to premiere on the streaming platform soon. Additionally, his BAFTA-nominated film 'Boiling Point' has been adapted into a sequel series by the BBC.
On the writing front, Damien Ober, credited with works like 'The OA' and 'Dominion,' will adapt Lehane's story for the screen. Ober's adaptation of the Denis Johnson novel 'Train Dreams' is in the pipeline, with Clint Bentley slated to direct and Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones set to star. Furthermore, Ober is preparing for the release of his second novel, 'Voidverse,' scheduled for 2025 under Simon & Schuster.
Dennis Lehane, the mastermind behind the original short story, will take on the role of executive producer for the adaptation. Represented by CAA, Echo Lake Entertainment, and Ann Rittenberg Literary Agency, Lehane's involvement ensures the project stays true to its thrilling roots.
