Philadelphia shooting: Boy, 14, shot dead playing football at school as four others injured

A 14-year-old boy has been killed after being shot in the chest and four others were injured in an ambush outside a school in Philadelphia.

Players were leaving after finishing an American football practice session at Roxborough High School, in the Roxborough neighbourhood, when at least 69 shots were fired towards the gates at 4.41pm (9:41pm UK) on Tuesday.

Five people were hit and football gear has been left lying by the roadside after the tragedy.

No arrests have been made, with police now reportedly looking for at least two shooters.

A boy, 14, was hit at least once in the chest and rushed to the Einstein Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 5:10pm, said police.

Police are looking for at least two shooters who were reportedly in a Ford Explorer (10Philadelphia)

The firing reportedly came from a light green Ford Explorer that pulled up by the school and then headed off westwards along Fairway Terrace.

Police did not confirm the vehicle that the shooters were travelling in, but revealed that they escaped on foot.

"There are at least two shooters that we can identify were shooting at these students, they fled from this location on foot and that’s about what we have at this point in time," said Philadelphia Police First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford.

"There are multiple cameras in the area which we obviously have to pull and review the video footage."

Another boy, 14, was hit the leg and he along with a 17-year-old who was hit four times, are reportedly in a stable condition at two different hospitals in the area.

Of the other two victims of the attack, the condition of one is said to be stable and the other suffered minor injuries.

The practice session involved players from Roxborough High School, Northeast High School and Boys' Latin Charter which ended around 4:30pm, Commissioner Stanford said.

He added: "There is a 14-year-old that I guess was doing what students do, have football games at the end of the day, one of the things we encourage our kids to do and for them not to make it home.

Police have said they will now review cameras from the area as they hunt the shooters who escaped on foot (10Philadelphia)

"So there is a family today, not to take away anything from the other families, but there is one family whose son won’t make it home today."

The Deputy Commisioner also pleaded with parents to educate their children on the evils of violence, saying it was important for them to know that "death is final".

School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Tony Watlington Sr said: “On behalf of all of us in the school district heats and prayers out to the families of today, reported NBC Philadelphia.

He continued: “I am personally disturbed and angry with this senseless act of violence, and it is unacceptable."

In a tweet Philadelphia governor Tom Wolf (D) expressed he and his wife's sorrow over the tragedy and urged lawmakers to pass gun control measures, writing: "This is unconscionable. Frances and I are praying for the students and family members affected.

"My colleagues in the PA legislature: It’s long past time for you to act on gun violence."
