With around 25% of the population suffering from hay fever and with reported shortages of medication sparking concern, independent pharmacy chain, Well Pharmacy, is urging people not to panic-buy hay fever medication or to stop taking prescribed medication for fear of running out. With a heat wave predicted, and peak pollen levels expected, the pharmacy chain is urging sufferers to continue to take their medication as prescribed, and to refrain from altering dosages over worries that they will run out.
Ifti Khan, Well’s Pharmacy Superintendent, said: “We know that people are very concerned regarding the news of shortages of hay fever medication. With warmer weather on the way, pollen will be at peak levels, and hay fever sufferers will be concerned.
"We want to reassure people that Well pharmacy is buying more stock direct from the manufacturer, which will be distributed directly to our pharmacies. If the usual medication isn’t available, please rest assured our pharmacy teams will be able to help you and recommend alternative products. We would urge people not to bulk buy. "
He added: “If you have never experienced hay fever, it is easy to dismiss it as slightly watery, itchy eyes. But it can affect the whole respiratory system, is a miserable experience for many and is often a relentless allergy to deal with.”
The pharmacy has reissued some tips for hay fever management.
