Northern Ireland’s largest pharmaceutical company Almac Group has pledged to reach net zero carbon by 2045.
The announcement by the Craigavon company, which comes as world leaders are meeting at the Cop 28 climate conference in Egypt, sees it pledge to reduce energy usage at its sites in the US and Asia Pacific, having recently done so to internationally-recognised standards across the UK.
In its Corporate Social Responsibility report it also said all new building projects at Almac Group campuses will be designed and constructed to Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) standards, or the appropriate global equivalent.
“As a global leader in providing a range of expert services and support across the drug development lifecycle, it is crucial that we demonstrate our commitment to the long-term sustainability of the sector,” Niall Harkin, Almac Executive Director, said. “I am hugely encouraged by the progress that we have made this year as detailed in this report and very proud of the environmental commitments that we announce today.”
The Almac Group focuses on the contract development and manufacturing of products for the pharmaceutical and bioscience sector. It is privately owned and now employs over 6,500 highly skilled personnel across 18 facilities including Europe, the USA and Asia.
