Following the Indianapolis Colts’ Week 6 win over the Tennessee Titans, Pro Football Focus has had a chance to review the tape and has handed out their weekly grades.
So, which Colts’ defenders performed the best in this matchup?
If you’re a frequent reader of these articles you know what’s coming next, which is my disclaimer that PFF’s grading system is certainly not the be-all-end-all when it comes to evaluation. It is just one tool out of many that are out there, but generally speaking, when a player performs well, the grades reflect that.
Below is a look at PFF’s grading system to provide some context behind the numbers:
90.0+: Elite
80-89.9: High quality
70-79.9: Good
60-69.9: Above average
50-59.9: Average
40-49.9: Below average
39.9 or less: Poor
CB Sam Womack
PFF grade: 88.0
Womack just continues to play really well for the Colts. Against the Titans, Womack was targeted four times and allowed just one completion for two yards. He also had a pair of pass breakups on those targets. Womack’s passer rating when targeted was just 39.6.
LB Jaylon Carlies
PFF grade: 84.9
As the third linebacker for the Colts when they line up in their base 4-3 defense, Carlies played 20 snaps on Sunday, which is the third-most he’s had in a game this season. PFF credited Carlies with four total tackles, while in coverage he allowed three receptions on four targets but held pass catchers to a total of just eight yards.
DT Grover Stewart
PFF grade: 81.0
Collectively, the Colts didn’t perform great against the run with the Titans averaging over 5.0 yards per attempt as a team. However, Stewart continued to find ways to make an impact. By PFF’s metrics, he finished the game with four tackles and three stops in the run game. Stewart’s impact also isn’t always going to show up in the stat sheet with the double-teams he takes on and space he eats up, helping to create for others.
