Peter Odemwingie teases Aubameyang over failed transfer award amid Barcelona reports for Arsenal striker

With just seven hours to go of the January transfer window, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found himself at the centre of a social media storm - after being described as the next Peter Odemwingie.

The former West Brom striker infamously drove to QPR’s training ground on deadline day in 2013, assured that he would be about to sign for the West London club despite a lack of agreement between the two clubs.

As it happened, the move never came off and Odemwingie was forced to apologise before seeing out the season at the Hawthorns, and leaving the following September with his profile significantly increased, if nothing else.

Fast forward to Monday’s deadline day and reports suggest Aubameyang may have made the same error.

A loan move from Arsenal to Barcelona was in the offing as he flew out to Spain, arriving at lunchtime and signing autographs as he exited the airport.

Quickly, reports emerged that the Gunners had not yet agreed terms on the move with Barcelona and some even claimed the switch had collapsed - leaving the Gabon forward stuck in Catalonia with no reason for being there.

That said, it is true that he has family in the area, and with the clock ticking some Spanish outlets maintain that the deal is going ahead. But that did not stop fans online from drawing comparisons between Aubameyang and Odemwingie.

The Nigerian himself weighed in, posting a photograph of a “long drive” trophy he won for making the trip to London on that fateful day.

He tweeted: “Am I passing the award on? Aubameyang just make sure you ask Aguero for advice.”
